My travels for work are taking me to an area of the states that I have wanted to explore for many years with my clubs: Northern Michigan. McKenzie sculpted the legendary Crystal Downs just outside of Traverse City. I will be exploring The Kingsley Club, a private core golf club catering to a national membership. Designed by Mike DeVries, this layout has earned a ton acclaim from accredited sources and I intend to share my journey with LC readers.

From one established destination club to a work project I am reviewing for a possible conversion to this same model, True North in Harbor Shores is a course designed by Jim Engh. I have to admit, my past dealings with his layouts have not left me enthralled, but I'll go in with an open mind to the course along with giving the reader an account of how the destination club model truly works and WHY it is so difficult to pull off in today's market.
